However you describe it, it's frustrating to feel trapped in your role.  No matter how well paid or convenient it is.

Others rarely understand your desire to escape, seeing it as a gilded cage.  Yet you're longing for a change, to spread your wings, to fly and thrive.

You need a plan.

CAREER COACHING - A CASE STUDY

Simon* works for a large multinational.  He was frustrated with his role and felt stuck in a comfortable but, ultimately, unfulfilling job.  He assumed that he would have to leave, in order to progress.

He loved the team management side of his role, but felt like he'd gone as far as he could on the technical front.  Learning had stalled and he felt like he was in a holding pattern.  He had ambitions for progression.

 

After spending some time exploring everything Simon had to offer from his work and life experiences, we identified that there were some gaps to be filled before he would be a credible candidate for promotion in his targeted field.  By taking a step back to work systemically (to look at the organisation, the industry and other influences on his situation) we found that the gaps could be addressed best through his current employer, rather than an external learning source or a different company.  This was backed up by a deep dive into feedback from previous external interviews and performance reviews. 

What hadn't been clear to Simon was the network he had, the connections he built, and that he lacked belief in his own credibility.  Through an action plan of enquiry, conversations and specifically targeted feedback requests, an opportunity presented itself for a different role at the same grade.  One that protected his benefits and family time, played to his strengths and that came with the opportunity to develop in the areas he needed.  He applied, used the strengths assessment we'd worked on initially to prepare for the interview and got the job.
